B.A.D. (Brownsville Appreciation Days)
Had been held on Sept 27th, Saturday, 1-4 pm
Eleven (11) club members helped out. We had 3 boats sailing in the lagoon, an
information table in the parking lot and members assisting at the dock helping
people in and out of our sailboats and the inflatables.
The marina gave us an atta-by for our particiapation. This was the largest
attendance ever for BAD.
The new signs on the boathouse have generated several new memberships. Money
well spent.
NEW

At the
November meeting we will be taking nominationf for club officers for the year
2009. Voting will be during the December meeting. New officers will take over at
the January meeting.

need volunteers and will be putting out an email to members telling the exact
date/times/ Also minor repairs will be done on the boats at that time.
The centerboard on #5: You have to be careful when lowering the centerboard. If
you just drop it into place, it may fall out of the holding slot.
Some of the new members have already been skippered.
The club will have its 50th anniversary next year. We need ideas on what kind of
celebration we should have.
Donation Reminder- At each meeting there is a $5 voluntary donation by each
attending member to the "new boat fund". Donations are tax deductibles as we are
a non-profit club. The fund is now at $130.
Club Website - We need someone to step forward to manage the club's website. Now
it is using the FrontPage format. It needs to be maintained and updated. This

Includes $933.70 in general funds and $716.87 in the new boat fund
Currently 16 Memberships
(The Duanes and Craig Cutting joined at end of meeting bringing total to 18)
Brownsville Appreciation Day (B.A.D.) will be Saturday, September 27. The Port
has invited us once again to have an information table set up and to give boat
rides in the “lagoon.”
We are scheduled
to be there 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. If you can help man the table or skipper a boat
please let Laurie know (davismgd@comcast.net).
If you haven’t attended B.A.D. before we encourage you to come check it out.
Jack Bailey says it will be great this year. There will be live entertainment, a
car show with 100 cars in the upper parking lot, thirty five vendors, super
cheap hot dogs and hamburgers, lots of fun for children and adults.
Chris Quinn and Rich McCullough have been out several times with new members
who are working on being skippered. Jim Zacovic is now skippered. The Munches
have gone out and daughter Mandy will be skippered soon.
New members all need to sign liability waivers and any quests that are taken
out need to sign a guest waiver.
There is a sail bag missing. The main and jib are folded up and placed on one
of the shelves.
The next meeting on October 14 will be held in the Deli at 7:00.
The Quinns will host a meeting at their house during the winter. Details will
follow when date is set.
Rich says the stays on #3 seem loose and that the mast rocks a little too much.
Steve Trunkey would be a good source for advice on how they should be tuned.
The cradle that #4 is sitting on needs new cushioning attached.
Rich would like to look into a tiller lock for single handed sailing. He is
also looking at a winch his dad has that we may be able to use to help with
hauling the boats on to the dock.
The Website needs updating. Anyone who has experience and/or desire to help
with this is encouraged to step forward. Steve Trunkey has done this in the
past; however he is now very busy with coaching the high schoolers for the
Central Kitsap club.
After B.A.D. we need help to take down the masts on a couple boats and get them
turned over for the winter. Contact Malcolm (davismgd@comcast.net) if you can
help.
Please rinse down the boats when you put them away after sailing. If anything
breaks or you notice any problems with a boat please note it on the sign out log
and contact Malcolm so we can get it fixed.
As you enjoy this beautiful fall sailing weather remember that you can go
online to the Port’s website at www.portofbrownsville.org and see what the wind
and tides at the marina are like. Use caution at low tide. If you go outside of
the green markers you can easily hit bottom.
We need more membership forms and brochures in the box on the shed. Laurie will
take care of this.
Respectfully submitted,
Laurie Davis
Treasurer

SECRETARY’S REPORT
Sorry, no Secretary’s report or review of past minutes.
TREASURER’S REPORT
Sorry, no Treasurer’s report. Malcolm said there were no new expenditures but significant income from new member dues.
VICE COMMODORE’S REPORT - MAINTENANCE
Hull #4 headstay failed recently and a replacement cable assembly is needed.
NEW MEMBERSHIP
Our public sail program has been fruitful. Malcolm reported Jason Esposito has skippered. Walter (Wayman?) wants to join and learn to sail. Debbi Duane family also is interested in joining. Several others have joined recently and will need a fair bit of instruction to become skippers, so we need all available skippers on deck. Please get in touch with Rich (c. 360.710.1702) with your best contact info and availability so we can get that out to new members. See attached for the current list. Rich will update as required. In lieu of social sails we will try to support new members with lessons/sailing opportunities in the coming month(s). New members should contact skippers directly to arrange outings.
NEW BUSINESS
Rich expressed interest in developing a policy for taking a boat beyond the
normal limit of line of sight, say Liberty Bay or south toward Port Orchard bay.
Chris said the policy of staying within eyesight of the marina is intended for
safety and convenience. A boat that capsizes is more likely to get noticed and
receive rescue assistance within sight of the marina. Wind often dies and when
combined with an unfavorable tide can make returning to the marina difficult. On
some social sails the club has had to depend on someone in the skiff to tow them
back. With Jack’s gracious loan of the electric trolling motor that challenge
can be dealt with. The trolling motor should be good an hour or two at medium
speed. Decision on a new policy was tabled pending further consideration.
The trolling motor is very helpful for getting out of the marina area in light winds. The Port long term plan is to move the club to a new spot out near the breakwater in a couple years where wind is more favorable. The dock is expected to have a sloping ramp into the water so launching should be simplified.
Jack emphasized that sailors being vigilant and maintain situational awareness when coming and going from the marina. Brownsville is seeing a lot more traffic at the fuel dock in part because the Port Orchard gas dock is temporarily out of commission.
Semi-formal open house in May. No additional info at this time.
Chris asked our new members not to hesitate to ask questions and provide the club with feedback about anything at all. We also don’t want them to feel pressured about becoming skippers this year if they are not comfortable. We want competent and confident skippers.
NEW MEMBER DISCOUNT
We discussed the new member discount policy that was the subject of previous meetings. Rich said we should honor that intent. Chris suggested a $10 per month discount as a simple prorate scheme. Malcolm suggested applying dues (estimated at about $50) for members joining after August 1 exclusively toward the new boat fund, since dues from other new members should be adequate to meet our operating expenses for this year. This new boat fund is dedicated exclusively to acquiring boats to upgrade our fleet. It stands at about $600 now. Our longer term members have been encouraged to donate $5 at each monthly meeting toward the new boat fund. Options could include acquiring some 15-18 year old Laser 2s from North Kitsap or maybe some Vangards.
Rich moved that we discount new member dues by $10 for each month prior to their joining down to (not less than) $50, and that dues paid after August 1 be dedicated to the new boat fund. Jack seconded and the motion carried.
TALL SHIPS
The Tall Ships (as many as four!) will be in Brownsville August 29th
(Friday).

PUBLIC SAIL/RECRUITMENT DRIVE
Went well. Nice day but the wind died a few times. Lot of sail rides were given
by Chris, Malcolm and Rich. Karen manned the chase boat. We got 2 mew members
from that day, plus the possibility of a future membership of 2 other families.
A good time was had by all.
The newspaper add that advertised our club and the sail was a success, so we
will be doing it again.
The date set will be the last Sunday of July, on the 27th. starting at 1pm - 4
pm. Rich be the contact again
and handle the calls. Malcolm, Rich and Chris voluntered to be the skippers
again. Sandy said she would man the dock. Malcolm will bring some radios so that
the boats and the dock can stay in contact with each other. A discussion on the
best placement of the prospective members to await their sail - maybe at the end
of A dock? Will save time so that the boats don't have to come all the way back
in.
Rich bought up the suggestion on how to impart our knowledge and skills to the
new members so they be skippered faster. Maybe have the current skippers
volunteer to teach 2 lesson. Need a syllubus for a guideline. Rich will see what
he can find.
Impression from the new members, Sandy and Pete, on how we could improve our
membership drive - as seen from their prospective of just going thru the process
we have.
1. Needs some teaching aspect, something solid to offer the new memeber
2. Geared toward adults
3. More contact once you have joined, let them know what is going on. Need a
process
SEA SCOUTS UPDATE
Nothing heard from them. Chris tried twice to contact them. Will keep them in
mind.
NEW PULLOUT
It's working but Rich needs to tweak it some more. Still have to figure the best
way to pull the boat up over the edge of the dock with the least pressure.
BOAT REPORT
We lost a boom on hull 6 as the track kept spreading. Malcolm replaced it with
one from the bone yard. Unknown cause.
The rudder keeper on hull 6 is not working. Malcolm will be looking for a spring
lock for it. The other boats have it but hull 6 didn't.

Rich had designed and build a new haul out system for taking our boats out of the water. Needs some minor tweaking.
Still no answer from the Sea Scouts about joining our club.
The Open House that was on May 10th was only attended by Chris and Malcolm. This was also our May monthly meeting. Nothing new.
It was decided by the members attending this meeting that Social Sails will now be determined at the monthly meeting for that month's sail.
Anyone joining the club during the June/July months will just be charged 1/2 the price of membership instead of the full price. Motion put forward by Rich and seconded by Laurie
New idea for a membership/recruitment drive - to advertise free rides in the Kitsap Sun Calendar of Events to include a free informal lesson on sailing on a specific day. Weather permitting, of course. Rich volunteered to be the person in charge of any advertising and also to be the contact person those interested parties would call to schedule. We would also be screening the interested parties for age, under 18 yoa have to be accompanied by an adult.

Treasurer's Report
$1,938.33 , which included $584 of our New Boat Fund.
As of 3/11, 7 members have paid their 2008 dues
Upcoming expenses are registration for the boat trailer, US Sailing dues, Insurance.
Equipment
Hull #7 has been stripped. The 4 hulls left on the dock are in good shape.
Membership
Laurie will be sending out the dues statements to last years members in this weeks mail. All that needs to be done is to write your check and mail it back.
Combo Change
The combination to the boat house will be changed and the new combo is to be given out to the members who have paid their 2008 dues at the April meeting. All members present agreed on the new combo.
Boathouse Signs
We had more discussion on the signage for the boathouse on either to place it on the side with the doors (24" x 94") (24" x 75") and have it cut into sections or to have it on the west side (closest to Illahee Road) . John can get the alumium either pre-painted or bare. He will get some scrapes of each to see how each would fit by the doors. The lettering wil lbe done by SignTown and will be luce and red on a white background. A sample picture was handed out.
Website
The new website is up and running. Same address www.peninsulassailingclub.org
$60 for the year. Uses Front Page. Steve Trunkey is the webmaster. If you have any good pictures or want to submit any interesting articles for the website, contact Karen or Steve. Steve want some feedback on how the web site is looking. Does it come up easily for your? The provider is Telebyte.
Birkenfield Trust
Same. No change
Sea Scouts Proposal
Malcom put forth a proposal for a layered membership for the Sea Scouts. The Boy Scouts of America's insurance covers them. They would be allowed to join under David Malchalski. The Sea Scouts have already been trained in safety, boating, first aid. They would still have to be checked out to be skippered on the boats. Liability Concerns? David will check to make sure that the Boy Scouts insurance will cover them. Laurie will check our insurance. Chriss will check out constitution. After this info is obtained, more discussion will be done.
New Haulout System
Brainstormed on a new haul out system so that the boats will not be damaged when being launched or being pulled out. Too much pressure on the mid line of the boats. Malcolm said he will get a rigid piece of plastic to try it on Boat Day. Crane? Sling? Think of some serious and not too expensive proposals by the next meeting so we can try it on Dirty Boat Day. Has to be single-person usage, safe and be able to be used on windy days.
SCHEDULE
APRIL 8th, Tuesday. April Monthy Meeting. 7 pm. Meet at the Deli.
APRIL 26th, last Saturday in April. Dirty Boat Day. 10:00 am - 1:00 pm..
We will pressure wash the boats and the everything else that
isn't nailed down. Clean & straighten the shed, scrub the boats.
Maybe paint the shed?
MAY 10th, 2nd Saturday in May. Open House. 10:00 am - 1:00 pm.
We set up a table and meet the public.

18 members as of the end of 2007
Equipment
We still need to strip the hardware off of Hull #7. This hull has a hole in it
that cannot be safely repaired.
The battery and the electric motor are ok.
Signage for the Boat Shed
Clark Jelley had some estimates and sample pictures of signs for our club to put
on the boat shed. We discussed the size of the signs, where they could be placed
for best viewing (roof, eves, sides and which side of the shed), wording on the
signs, the font and font size, and the thickness of the aluminum itself.
John will see if he can get a better price on the alumium. Malcomn will get a
better pricing on the lettering. Up to $200 was approved. Anything over $200 and
Chris will send it out to the membership.
Webite
There have been problems of people not being able to access our website. Steve
Trunkey will contact the current webmaster and see it our website can be moved
to a telebyte(??) host. This should allow for easier access and editability.
Door Code
The code to the lock on the boat shed is due to be changed. Several suggestions
were giv en at the meeting. If you have a suggesting, send it to Karen or come
to the March meeting to submit it. The code will be changed on April 1st and
will only be given out to those who's membership is paid up.
Membership
If the previous paragraph didn't jog your memory, it is time to pay your 2008
membership dues. The cost is the same as last year. Send your checks to Laurie
or better yet, bring them to the next meeting.
Boat Fund
We are still trying to build up our new boat fund so we can buy a new boat.
Donations are very welcome. A suggestion was put forward at this meeting that
every person attending a meeting can voluntarily donate $5 toward the fund.
Everyone present immediately donated $5.
Birkenfield Trust
Still no luck in getting any money for our club from the trust per Chris. He
thinks we may have a chance if we change our non profit status from 501.C.7 to
501.C.3. If anyone knows how to do this, contact me or Chris.
Brainstorming
We discussed ideas on an easier way to launch and retrieve our boats from the
water to the dock without putting any strain on the boat's structure.
